Hikes these days are less frequent than ever before and on this particular day, our hike lasted 1 hour. With that said, the short hike was refreshing and very rewarding to get outside with the ladies. Apologies in advance for so many photos with of the plaid.

West Fork of the Black

Labor day weekend we managed to leave most of the crowds behind in one of the few, East-West facing mountain ranges in the US, the Uintas. Jonathon made the trip out to fish this storied bend in the West Fork of the Blacks.

Apparently the fishing wasn't too hot as we had to resort to meat on a stick. While not the traditional way to cook over a fire, I highly recommend this old school way of smoking out your meat. The meal certainly didn't disappoint.

Mr. Hart, thanks for making the trip out to Utah again as we keep the late summer camping trip tradition alive.

Tour of Utah Prologue

In early August I had the opportunity to race in the Tour of Utah with Nathan. Well sort of, as 10 amateurs were invited to race the prologue at the Utah Olympic Park just minutes before the pros. It was an amazing experience, one that I tried to keep my eyes open the whole time because I knew it would be the world's fastest bike race. Sure enough, the 1.3 mile, 600 foot, 7% grade was over in 6 minutes. I ended up landing a 3rd place finish among the amateurs, although got smoked by the winning pro by 2 minutes. At the end of the day it was one of the cooler sporting experiences that I have been involved with. Thanks, thanks, thanks to Beth and Jill for the support.

Tangled up in the Oregon Summer

We just returned from a trip back to the homeland. Brice and Sam tied the knot. The wedding was absolutely stunning and a long week presented a much needed break a busy life, a time when old and new friends could cross paths. There was a softball game, plenty of golf (sorry Beth), Lovejoy the photographer, the BIG Timer, TO, a best man speech, a beautiful wedding couple and of course, Pienovi, Cooper and Big Al. The Oregon summer is a hard one to beat, with day temps in the low 80s and nights dropping into the 40s. On top of it all it was pretty rewarding to take my daughter back the the NorthWest.

Ho'okipa Maui

A return trip to the islands of aloha, sandwiched precariously between Japan and the US mainland, was not just another chance to dip our winter toes into the sand, but a vacation that was spiritual on many levels. Beth and I lived on Oahu for a year in 2003, and in the years since, I have come and gone for windows of time chasing cycling vacationers around the Big Island. Even though our time spent in Hawai'i really doesn't add up to much of a tan, this place is sooo special to both of us. We really fell in love here, specifically in the Halawa Valley where I pulled a simple ring from my board shorts that found it's way on to Beth's ring finger. We met so many kind people over the years, from Jocelyn and Richard at Erdman to Walter on Moloka'i and most recently, Joy and Ed on Maui. As I pull various memories from our time in Hawai'i, the common thread that surfaces is the simplicity of life here under the sun and the open connection to the land and water. Simplicity is an offering that is more and more difficult to find among our era of blogs and smart phones and of course life in a city, so with that said, these short 8 days on Maui gave our family the time to slow down. Our family now includes G, who is nearly 6 months old. Life with Grace is amazing, although challenging as Beth and I try and find balance. Whether it's the world's freshest air, the cleansing rain, rich fruit, leeward and winward coasts, a green house, we are pretty psyched right now standing in the middle of the pacific.

Happy New Years everyone. I hope that you have unbelievable New Years resolutions in place. I wonder how many resolutions we actually stick with? Here is an old ski shot that Aaron took a couple springs ago. I like the subdued colors and wanted to post this non-wintery photo in the middle of one snow storm after another this time of year in the Wasatch Mountains. Beth, Grace and I cruised down to Castle Valley for a couple of days on the Colorado River near Moab. This is the view of one of America's classic waterways from just outside our lodge room. The balance of the photos are just classic shots of Grace. Turns out when you have a two month old daughter she usually ends up in the frame. Enjoy. And oh yeah, while we were down in the desert there was a wild west shoot-out near Canyonlands National Park. Luckily all of this action went down a few folds in the red rock to the West.

Yesterday, September 15th, Beth's water broke in the middle of the night. Now I really understand what it means for water to 'break.' Once at the hospital the ultrasound illuminated an upside down baby girl. Apparently, she did not listen to Jen's head stand pep talks. This meant that a cesarean section was the only way to go and within five hours of arriving at the hospital we had a beautiful baby girl in our arms.

She weighed in at 6 pounds 17.5 inches long and still has no name. We will report back in a couple of days with a name. Thanks to all of our family and friends for the great messages and support. It's pretty darn fun around here right now!

Calm Before the Storm

Beth and I had a chance to break for the high Uinta mountains for a week to relax, get off the grid, and chill before our little babe drops. We navigated the north slope of the Uintas, bounced down a dirt road for 30 miles until the road went no more. At this no more point, rests Spirit Lake at 10,200 feet. There are 9 cabins that sit near the lake. When we arrived, we were greeted by the proprietor, his mom and wife, and oh yeah, a baby raccoon on his shoulder named Radar. We settled into our cabin with nothing more than a bed and a roof, but content as content can be. Beth rested and read a ton and I caught the same rainbow trout, under the same bridge 3 mornings in a row. All good stuff and we hope that you find yourself at Spirit Lake one day.

Puddles in the Desert

Let's talk about spring in Utah. Right now the hills are green as rain occasionally pounds this city on the edge of the dessert. A city on the edge of a season, a very dry hot season just around the corner. But before worrying about the heat of the summer, I want to share a short story about puddles.

A couple of days ago in the middle of a spring rain, there was this little dude, probably age 8, standing on a street corner. He nearly had his toes dipped in an enormous puddle, but with two open arms and a huge smile, he welcomed the next vehicle that would send that puddle overhead. Sure enough, that next vehicle was a large Ford F250 that playfully drove into the puddle and drenched every square inch on that 8 year old. As only a kid would do, he started laughing and smiling. He looked back over his shoulder, mom standing 30 feet clear of the spraying zone, pleading to hang out by this puddle in the desert. His mom shook her head, clearly signaling that once was enough. Although he obviously wanted to hang there the rest of the day, that one spray was satisfying. As this 8 year old kid walked away completely wet and happy, it made me appreciate the laid-back attitude that kids bring daily. And for this I am thankful. Cheers to puddles in the desert.

In my first ski race ever, I finished 2nd overall in the recreation division. I climbed/skied 6.5 miles and 3500' in 1:45 minutes. It was a blast and I look forward to next year. In next year's race watch out for that man from Ohio.

AS and I woke up in the dark on a beautiful spring day to ski the Mill B drainage in Big Cottonwood. Notes for next year; we started hiking from the Lake Blanche trailhead by headlamp at 4:45am. We walked 1.5 hours on the dirt trail until we hit the snowline. We booted/and skinned the ridge East of Yer Crazy which is a ski shot East of Dromedary Peak. The high altitude lichen was beautiful and vibrant against Utah's blue canvas.

AS approaching the top of the drainage, 10ish at this time and you can see how the snow had already softened up.

Looking back on the Mill B drainage and our route all the way from the road at the crease of the valley floor. Ask AS how he liked booting this section.

This is a panormic I took of LCC, and some of the most famous ski lines in the West. I plan to use this photo as a reference for future adventures.

AS descending after much deserved corn turns. Time of descent noonish. At this point of the day West facing slopes were perfect corn, however, North facing was still too firm.

The route was alright, although you can see quite a bit of debris from previous days' warming. This debris compromised the quality of a few turns, but what the hell, we are skiing in late May.

For the third consecutive year we managed our way up to the Big Water Yurt in MillCreek Canyon. We stayed for three nights which gave us plenty of time to drink coffee, practice beacon searches and hilarious jumping attempts compliments of Ryan. Even though Tiana claimed that she was trip leader B or C, you will notice that she is always mapping out the route or heading the skin charge. Good work T! Lovie even made an appearance, on tele skis for the first time. Thanks y'all for another great trip and get ready for next year!!

Melby and the Big Timer came to town. It was great to have the Northwest make a trip out our way. The inaugural game of croquet took place at the Elizabeth house, a Mishka concert complete with our own freestyling, a late night stop at 7-11 for beef jerky and other terrible barely edibles. Of course, the entire weekend, we all went BIG!

170 inches fell in the Wasatch Mountains in a 2 week period. This is not only insane, but set 30 year records. With more than a foot each night for 2 straight weeks "you betcha" there was skiing in the foothills this spring!

Yep, we did uncover some rather large rocks. I am seriously considering removing all these rogue rocks from the hills this summer so that next year's foothill conditions will be buffed out smooth.

I love shooting in stormy conditions. Storms force the photographer to play with texture and space, not to mention the dynamic color range produced during these intense environments. To be honest, I would rather shoot a midday storm over sunrise and sunset. Sunrise and sunset gives you a small window to capture that damn light. Meanwhile, storms provide a longer shooting platform with the potential for more light brillance.

Shooting in black in white, the South Pointe Mountains stand out like wildfire contrasting with the dark and uniform lines of Salt Lake's grid system.

Salt and Pablano Tacos

On a whim, Ryan and I drove out to the Bonneville Salt Flats on the Utah/Nevada border. Our motivation was to shoot photos of the setting sun on this unique desert landscape. While the sunset was not super brilliant, exploring the outskirts near Wendover captured our attention. We found old and oxidized WWII plane hangers, giant salt crystals and an awesome little mexican restuarant called Taco Pablano.

The below photo is actually a combination of three photos to gain the High Dynamic Range (HDR) effect. The shot has an ominous sort of appeal in which the snow capped mountains hold a vivid white, yet the foreground throws some deep darks.

The 7 Minute Drive . . . . . .

Living in Salt Lake City, you are easily programmed to believe that the only skiable destinations involve the drive up Little or Big Cottonwood Canyons. I beg to differ, so Beth and I drove a short 7 minutes to the end of Terrace Hill drive. Within about 15 minutes of leaving the house we were skinning up. This is why I love living here. We skinned up the Shoreline trail, decided to leave the Bobsled trail for the mountain bikers and continued up the ridge leading towards Black Mountain.

Winter At The Ridge

This is our third trip to a cabin in the San Jaun Mountains of Southwestern Colorado simply referred to as "The Ridge." North of Telluride, near the towns of Ridgeway and Ouray, we skied a half a day into this cabin that Aaron's family built in the late 70's. The area is fairly remote, bordered by the Nature Conservancy land on most sides. It is not uncommon to see herds of elk in the shadows of 14,000 peaks.

Here is the actual space known as "The Ridge." Aaron's family cabin to the right, the tiny roof of the steam bath jutting behind and Auntie Lynn's cabin off to the left. San Jaun Mountains in the background.

We have started sort of a funny tradition by buying fake tattoos in Green River Utah before heading to the Ridge.

Our first full day at the Ridge was spent perfecting a quarter-pipe jump that we built off the edge of the deck. We could not get Beth and Jill to jump, so they drank coffee and napped. They claimed that the house shook everytime we went off the jump.

Not even Beth can distract this focused skier!

I think the below photo turned out pretty sweet as the remote flash fired and lit up Aaron under the house's dark overhang.

Beth has really come a long ways in terms of her photography talents, although she still could not manage to get my entire head in the shot. Once she took photos of me jumping off cliffs in Hawaii and all you would ever see was the splash.

I am certain that the above mountain is one never before seen, hidden within the Wasatch Mountains. But it is on this warm Martin Luther King holiday, that Mr. Ott, the Stanfords, and Little R showed Jen and Sam (formerly from South America) how to enjoy the Mountain West. While many have stomped a landing or two here, landing big deals with Oakley and DaKine, we were also poised to land smoothly on the back of a mine tailing or two. Grill strapped to our backs and boom box in hand, we climbed the warm south facing slopes to build our very own kickers.

Ahhh, a nice level spot to build the snow couch, Mt. Superior behind us and a nice steep landing out of view to the left for our kickers.

I don't think too much should be said about the below photo, as Ryan absolutely captured the mood from this corner of the Wasatch.

I am really excited about these next two shots that Ryan captured. To gain this perspective, he laid directly under the jump, shooting skyward as we flew over him. Nice work, it was a ton of fun to have a couple people shooting each jump, look for our work in the upcoming TGR films. Our production and crew name is still up to the jury!

We hope to visit this place known as the 'Dolla Bill Cafeteria' as often as possible.

Viva Blue Pot Soup Nights!

For those of you who have ever visited the Red House (infamously known as the Purple House) in Portland Oregon, understand that I was raised in a house with open doors. Sure, often these open doors would invite neighborhood cats, or Steve's affinity to picking up a new language, but mostly our house was always open to friends and family. This is my Mom's way of life and I am absolutely lucky to have grown up under her generosity. And of course, once you found yourself in the house, my Mom would keep you with an amazing meal. So, as sort of a tribute to my Mom, Beth and I host a "Blue Pot Soup Night" once a month in which we invite our friends and Salt Lake Family to Elizabeth street. Those of you who have visited our house, know full well, that it is quite exciting to pack as many as 17 people into the front room. The following photos are those grabbed during the first few slurps of each months' soup nights. Thanks to all who have joined us for Blue Pot Soup Night in Salt Lake city as my mom's tradition continues. And mostly, thanks to you Moose for the soup itself!

Ski This. . . Pushing Alta's Rope Lines

This photo illustrates this season's huge avalanche conditions. This image was shot one week after the entire BackSide slid to the ground. So, with backcountry terrain off limits for now, the following photos document a sunny and cold (5 degrees) day within the boundarys of Alta. Beth, Aaron and myself moved as far away from the Devil's Elbow to find these turns. It is also worth pointing out that on this particular day, there is just one photo of Beth, as she was not the most cooperative local! In fact, her Burnin' Loves would often take her in the complete opposite direction of the poised and waiting camera. . . . . as I look back on these photos taken a couple of weeks ago, it was sure worth the damn cold.

Hoosier Christmas

We travelled East a couple of time zones to enjoy Christmas with our family on the winery in South Indy. This holiday gift wrapped a beautiful little girl named Emma. Beth and I are Auntie and Uncle, but the best part is that she sleeps 8 hours through the night. What a champ.

The Mooses or the B-OTT's, depending upon where you met us, two characters who have put off cell phones and texting for the likes of the 'simpler' life in far off places, are making a go of it. . . . . coming out of the woods in an effort to document some of the spaces in life worth revisiting. Revisiting most of these spaces, of course, often means a trip back to the woods or maybe even a wild night on the Vegas strip!
